Officially a fan of Google Chrome (Beta)

By Micaiah Filkins • September 6th, 2008

This week we have seen no shortage of commentary on the Google Chrome browser. Today I am going to give you my take on why Chrome is a superior browser for the key web apps that I use on a daily basis.

So to set the stage, I am a functional consultant who spends most of his day in Salesforce.com. There are some days that the entire work day is creating new configurations in Salesforce’s click to configure interface. Because of this I and other web app specialists have a tendency to notice small changes in the speed of the application.

When Chrome was released earlier this week, I downloaded and installed it within minutes of the official release. The first thing I said was “WOW, Chrome is lightning fast!” When using Chrome in Salesforce, there was not just a noticeable difference but a drastic difference.

Then I put FireFox 2, beside Chrome and clicked on links inside Salesforce. On average Chrome loaded pages twice as fast, meaning that the page was ready to use. In many cases my anecdotal testing showed the pages loaded in roughly 2 seconds, in FireFox I was seeing 4 second loads.

Next I loaded Internet Explorer 7, beside Chrome. My admittedly unscientific side by side test showed Chrome to load about 1 second faster than Internet Explorer 7. Additionally, Chrome easily bested Internet Explorer in start up time when loading the browser.

To most users this 1-2 second difference may not be important, however if you are one of the over 1Million Salesforce users that spend your entire day in the application. These precious seconds can give you more time in your day. My estimate is that Chrome is giving me back about 5 minutes per day, 25-30 minutes per week! I don’t know about you, but I am busy enough that I can really appreciate the extra half hour each week. Maybe I will use it to write more blog posts, in Chrome of course!

I’m a bit behind the curve on this, but I just tried using Salesforce in Chrome and was blown away by the speed improvement. It makes a big difference for me, particularly when I’m doing tedious configuration changes in a sandbox and have to load many page layout or other settings pages over and over. It may only save 5 seconds as you say, but there’s a psychological boost to having it load faster, particularly when you’re doing tedious configuration tasks.

Hi Seth -

Glad to have you on the Chrome band wagon!

I will be the first to admit that there are still some issues. A few of the Salesforce.com features still do not completely work with Chrome, no biggy, IE and FF are still standing by.
